Impressed by MU Standards?

Since “Meaningful Use” standards for electronic health information technology have been finalized, health care practitioners have been buzzing! Most seem to be excited about the potential for electronic health records to improve health care in the United States and the ability of the standards to strike a balance between specificity and achievability.
When commenting on the latest meaningful use standards, John Halamka, MD said, “The final rule means Meaningful Use will be achievable by many. The Standards and the process to certify their use are sufficiently specific. I’m impressed.”  Meaningful Use seems to have struck the right balance by rewarding providers who use healthcare technology, like e-prescribing, without unnecessarily burdening them.  There are clear and comprehensive options for achieving Meaningful Use which begins in less than 6 months.
However, the buzz from doctors may be more complicated than initially believed.  In our next post, learn what Dr. Tom Sullivan has to say about members of the medical community who may have a few reservations about the final meaningful use standards.
