HIMSS23 Shines a Spotlight on AI

What do you get when you mix 35,000 health IT pros with hundreds of lively educational sessions and an exhibit hall packed with more than 1,000 tech innovators? There’s only one answer: HIMSS23!

After the last few years spent scrambling to survive a crazy confluence of challenging events—a global pandemic and critical workforce shortage among them—hospital and health system leaders finally had some breathing room to focus on innovation. The evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare grabbed much of the attention, with discussion and debate about the ways it might automate everything from diagnoses to data entry.

To many in attendance, it may have seemed as though this technology appeared on the healthcare scene suddenly. But at the DrFirst booth, AI wasn’t new. In fact, our customers have been using it to automate medication management tasks since 2015. This year, our conversations focused on redefining medication management for hospitals, health systems, and health IT partners from around the country, using AI for what it does best: increase safety and relieve people from tedious, repetitive, and time-consuming tasks.

Here are some of our favorite moments from Chicago. What were yours?

Inspiring Sessions

We were wowed by two presentations from our customers, who covered how their health systems consolidated multiple electronic health record (EHR) systems into one and optimized patient data in the process.

Approach to migrating medication records

Kat Hasanovic, MSN, RN-BC, Senior Director, Clinical EHR Applications (left), and Stacey Johnston, M.D., M.H.A., CHCIO, Chief Application Officer and Epic Program Executive (right) from Baptist Health, presented a 1-2-3 approach to migrating medication records and empowering clinicians with robust patient data.

The audience related to Kimberly Thorp, MBA, RPh, CPh, BCMTMS, System Director of Pharmacy at NCH Healthcare System, when she discussed the challenges of med rec—and how NCH overcame them.

Making Headlines

Journalists sought out our customers and DrFirst leaders for their expertise on the hot topics buzzing around the show floor. Watch for links to some fascinating conversations in the form of articles, podcasts, and videos.

time savings and workflow efficiencies interview  Intelligent medication management, efficiencies gained through clinical-grade AI, and other HIT innovations  AI in intelligent medication management

Dave Fornell of Innovate Healthcare interviewed Kat Hasanovic, MSN, RN-BC, about the time savings and workflow efficiencies Baptist Health’s clinicians gained by having easy access to patient medication profiles.

Bill Russell of This Week Health and our CEO, Cam Deemer, discussed intelligent medication management, efficiencies gained through clinical-grade AI, and other HIT innovations.

Anastassia Gliadkovskaya of Fierce Healthcare sat down with our Chief Medical Officer, Colin Banas, M.D., M.H.A., for a conversation about the powerful role of AI in intelligent medication management.

Growing Partnerships

HIMSS celebrates collaboration, emphasizing the notion that none of us can solve healthcare’s most complex problems on our own. This year’s exhibit hall was populated with the names of the industry’s biggest leaders, many of whom we are proud to call our partners.

At meetings, over meals, and in casual conversations, we made plans with our EHR, healthcare information systems, and health IT partners to implement regulatory-compliant technology and frictionless workflows suited specifically for their unique clients.

Saying So Long

Our team rises to every challenge, solving some of the hardest problems in healthcare alongside hospital, health system, and health IT leaders. The toughest part? Saying goodbye…until next year!

If you didn’t attend this year or didn’t have a chance to stop by our booth, please reach out. We welcome the opportunity to discuss what redefining medication management means to you. Contact us today.
