I’m excited to let you know that our CMO, Peter Kaufman, MD is set to co-host one of the HIMSS education sessions titled, Initial Experience with E-Prescribing of Controlled Substances: How It’s Done.
For about a year and a half now, DrFirst has been working very hard to overcome the final major barrier to widespread adoption of e-prescribing: the problem of controlled substances and the DEA’s need to ensure it can enforce relevant laws in an electronic environment. We set out to demonstrate that although the DEA has numerous concerns, we have the technology and capability to make the process efficient, secure, and safe.
Under a waiver from the DEA, we have worked closely with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and ERx Network to implement our security protocol within pharmacy and physician software—along with the network which connects them—to conduct a pilot program allowing outpatient centers to electronically prescribe controlled substances. In September 2009, Berkshire Medical Group, sent the nation’s first DEA-approved prescription of a controlled substance electronically, using DrFirst’s e-prescribing application, Rcopia. This one prescription was a huge milestone in the ongoing advancements in electronic prescribing, and has helped pave the road for others to see How It’s Done!
This is a must see event at this year’s HIMSS conference! We hope to see you there!
